Memorial Day Weekend

The unofficial start to summer is this weekend!  The weather couldn’t be more spectacular for any outdoor activity. Be sure to spend some quality time with friends and family- AND get out and ride! There are lots of choices from rides to races. Take a look below for all your options.

Sunday ride. This Sunday the group will head out on the Sister’s loop, which is 40 miles and will average 19mph. The ride will depart from HG Highland Park at 8AM.

Tuesday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 9:30AM. The 1.5 hour ride is split into groups based on ability.

Wednesday Women’s ride. Last week we tried the rotating paceline with great success. This week we’ll look to be even smoother and keep building our confidence and skill! Join this great group of ladies for a wonderful evening ride. The ride will depart from HG HP at 6:30PM, average 17mph for 23 miles.

Friday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 5:30AM for a 1 hour, 17mph ride.

Events:

Memorial Day Weekend Master’s Races. For those wanting to stay close to home, and are over 30, head out to Wood Dale for a full weekend of racing. For details click here

Memorial Weekend Races in the Quad Cities. This series starts off with a road race today for the men’s fields and continues on all weekend with some pretty intense courses and competition. For information on all the events click here

Bike the Drive Looking to get in a scenic ride at a leisurely pace? Head out to Bike the Drive and take in the scenery along Lake Shore Drive. Proceeds from the event go to the Active Transportation Alliance. For details on the event click here

Upcoming Events:

Lake Bluff Twilight Criterium. This race makes the weekend a one-two punch for crit riders. It’s a brand new race and the competition is sure to be tough. For details click here

Women’s Dirt Days Event #3. These mountain bike events are low key and lots of fun! Head out to Palos for a sweet change of pace. For details click here

Lake Geneva Road Race. This is a new road race, but it’s sure to be a hilly one.  There aren’t too many road races in the area, so don’t miss out. For race details click here

Glencoe Grand Prix. This tough and technical course is the stage for the Illinois State Criterium championships. It’ll be a full day of exciting racing. For details click here

Opening night at the Northbrook Velodrome was a blast. It was great to get back out there with all the familiar faces and a few new ones. Everyone is riding strong and smooth! I’m looking forward to a great season. Although there was a chill in the air earlier this week, and of course, last night at the velodrome, the heat is dialing up for the weekend. Get out and enjoy some great riding and racing, see the options below:

Sunday Endurance ride. This Sunday the group will head out on the Pyramid loop, which is 53 miles and will average 19mph. The ride will depart from HG Highland Park at 8AM.

Tuesday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 9:30AM. The 1.5 hour ride is split into groups based on ability.

Wednesday Women’s ride. Continue to work on your bike skills and join us this Wednesday for rotating paceline day. The ride will depart from HG HP at 6:30PM, average 17mph for 23 miles.

Friday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 5:30AM for a 1 hour, 17mph ride.

This Weekend’s Events:

Fox River Omnium.  This Elgin and Fox River Grove combo series should be challenging and exciting. Saturday’s race in Elgin appears to be a new course – gotta check it out. Sunday’s race is for the climbing crew. Come out and test the legs and enjoy some great competition. For details click here

Upcoming Events:

Memorial Day Weekend Master’s Races. If you’re over 30 and you’d like to race, but stay close to home, head out to Master’s Series in Wood Dale. These industrial park courses have their challenges, but they are not too technical. For details click here

Memorial Weekend Races in the Quad Cities. Once upon a time, this series was the unofficial start of the cycling season. Although there are so many early races these days, not many compare to this series, which includes the famed, ‘Snake Alley’. For information on all the events click here

Bike the Drive Looking for a chance to ride on Lakeshore Drive? Don’t miss out on this year’s Bike the Drive. It’s a low-key cycling event with the best scenery around. Proceeds from the event go to the Active Transportation Alliance. For details on the event click here

Northbrook Velodrome Opening Night

This Thursday evening is opening night for the 2012 racing season at the Northbrook Velodrome. There’ll be a chill in the air, but there’ll be plenty of heat when the racing gets started! Come out and race or cheer on your favorite riders. For details on opening night or the season schedule click here

Take part in Higher Gear’s weekly rides, there’s something for everyone. The week’s rides include the following:

Saturday Intensity ride. This ride departs from Higher Gear Highland Park at 7AM on Saturday. The focus is on interval training for racing.

Sunday Endurance ride. This Sunday the group will head out on the Sylvan Lake loop, which is 40 miles and will average 19mph. The ride will depart from HG HP at 8AM.

Tuesday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 9:30AM. The 1.5 hour ride is split into groups based on ability

Wednesday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG HP at 6:30PM for a 20 mile loop. The focus of the ride is paceline and bike handling skills.

Friday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 5:30AM for a 1 hour, 17mph ride.

Events:

Monsters of the Midway With two long straightaways and wide open turns, it isn’t the course that’ll challenge you, but the proximity to the lake. Headwinds and tailwinds are almost always part of this race. No matter what the weather, it’s always fun to race at this historic location. For details on the event click here

Matt Wittig Memorial Criterium.  Located in a park in Muskego, Wisconsin, this course has a great descent with a sweeping turn and a hill that’ll hurt, but not too much! For details on the event click here

Women’s Dirt Days #2. If mountain biking is your kinda riding or if you’re curious about hitting the trails, join this great group of ladies at the Palos Forest Preserve. The event starts at 9AM for details click here

Looking Ahead:

Fox River Omnium. The Fox River Omnium includes the Elgin Cycling Classic on Saturday and the Fox River Grove Criterium on Sunday. Both courses offer challenging, but fun terrain. For race details click here.

Sunday Ride – The Ivanhoe Loop

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Sunday ride, so we’re stepping out this Sunday and taking on the Ivanhoe loop! It’s a 65 mile westerly loop, which will depart from Higher Gear Highland Park at 8AM sharp. The ride will average 19mph.  Don’t miss out!

We also have a full slate of rides throughout the week. Check the details below for a ride(s) that works for you.

Women’s rides. Tuesday morning out of HG Wilmette, departing at 9:30AM – this is a 1.5 hour ride split into groups based on ability. Wednesday evening at 6:30PM HG Highland Park – this is a 20+ mile ride averaging 15-17mph and focuses on paceline sills. Friday morning at 5:30AM, departing from HG Wilmette – this is a 1 hour ride which will average 17mph.

Thursday Tempo ride. This ride departs HG Wilmette at 5:30PM. This ride averages 20+mph.

Saturday Intensity ride. This ride departs HG Highland Park at 7AM on Saturday. This ride focuses on interval work to prepare for racing.

Women’s Track Cycling Clinic. Track season is just around the corner, what better way to prepare for a new endeavor than to attend the women’s track cycling clinic. Join us tomorrow morning and learn everything you need to know to get started racing at the velodrome. For clinic details click here

Tour de CU. It’s worth the drive to central Illinois with a two race weekend. The Tour of Champaign is on Saturday and the Urbana Grand Prix is on Sunday. Both races promise to be fun and competitive! For race info click here

Coming Soon

Monsters of the Midway (M.O.M.). Just in time for Mother’s day, this race is an oldie but goodie! It’s located on the University of Chicago campus and features long straightaways and wide open turns. Perfect for beginners and experienced racers alike. For race details click here

Matt Wittig Memorial Criterium. This is another favorite crit of mine. It’s a mile loop around a park in Muskego, Wisconsin, with a fun downhill, a sweeping corner and a little climbing on the backside. For race details click here
