Labor Day Weekend

We’ve enjoyed a great summer with lots of hot weather, great rides and races. As one season wraps up, another will begin, keeping us rolling along. Last night we had two amazing state championships at Northbrook Velodrome; the Elaine Nekritz Scratch race and the Madison. What a night of racing!! Read on, as there are plenty of things to keep you busy this weekend.

Rides:

Saturday No Drop Ride. This 2 hour ride departs from Higher Gear Wilmette at 7AM. Riders enjoy a scenic ride along Sheridan Road.

Sunday Ride. Our Sunday ride will be cancelled for the next few weeks. We will pick up again starting Sunday, September 22.

Tuesday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 9:30AM. The 1.5 hour ride is split into groups based on ability.

Wednesday Women’s Ride. This will be the final Wednesday ride of the season : ( Since we’re a little short on light, we’ll start at 6:15pm. Bring your blinkie lights and something for a post ride celebration.

Fredo’s Ride.  Join Fredo on a fast paced group ride each Thursday night during the summer. The ride departs from HG Wilmette at 5:30PM and averages 20+mph.

Events:

Gateway cup.  This 4 day St Louis series offers challenging courses and great competition. If you haven’t fulfilled your road season race fix, head south for a spectacular weekend. For details click here.

ABR National Track Championships. Have you made it out to the Velo Campus on the south side? It’s an amazing 160 meter track that will take your breath away with its 50 degree banking! This weekend they will host the ABR championship races as well as offer certifications to race on the track. For details click here.

Return to Cherry Valley Time Trial. Looking for a time trial this weekend? Head out to the Cherry Valley 20K TT course. For race details click here.

Coming soon:

Women’s & Trans Cyclocross Clinic for Beginners. Cyclo-cross season is right around the corner. Get a tune up on your skills or learn the basics at this upcoming clinic. For details click here.

Team Time Trial. This is one of my favorite races. To do well you must ride smart and ride for your team. Unfortunately there isn’t any information available about this year’s course, but I’ve been told by multiple sources that the race will go on. Check the ABR website for any further developments.

Wrigleyville Road Tour

This past Wednesday, we were treated to an awesome cycling clinic with Rahsaan Bahati. We covered everything from cornering to sprinting. Rahsaan’s mission is to give back to the sport that helped him succeed. Check out this short video and consider making a donation to his Foundation.  Bahati youtube video.

Now that you’re inspired, it’s time to get out and ride. See the rides and races below to keep you on track with your training!

Rides:

Sunday ride. This Sunday is Higher Gear’s main event, the Wrigleyville Road Tour. Its 100 miles of fun, followed by a big party at Wrigley Field. For event details click here.

Tuesday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 9:30AM. The 1.5 hour ride is split into groups based on ability.

Wednesday Women’s ride. Join us for pacelines and group riding skills. The ride departs from HG HP at 6:30PM and will average above 17mph.  

Fredo’s Ride.  Join Fredo on a fast paced group ride each Thursday night during the summer. The ride departs from HG Wilmette at 5:30PM and averages 20+mph. 

Events:

Villa Park Grand Prix. New to the local racing calendar is the Villa Park Grand Prix. With the road season coming to a close, this is a welcome event. For more details click here.

State Points Race. There’s great racing every Thursday at the Northbrook Velodrome, but this coming Thursday is the State Points Race, sponsored by Chicago Chiropractic and Higher Gear. Come out and race or come out and cheer on your favorite athletes. For details click here.

Coming Up:

Jackson Park Relay Cross. It’s hard to believe that we are almost in cross season. Everyone’s favorite warm-up race is next week in Jackson Park. Get your bike tuned up, get your partner and head down to the side for a little cross action. For details click here.

Darrell Fisher Loop

The Olympics are winding down and for some of us that means a little more sleep! I’ve spent too many hours in front of the TV over the last few weeks watching the best athletes in the world compete. Amazing!! Not only are they incredible athletes, but most of them have made great sacrifices in order to reach their goals. Our goals may not be as far reaching as Olympic athletes, but we should still work to achieve them. Below are local rides and races to help you stay on track.

 

Rides:

 

Sunday Ride. This week we’ll change it up a bit and head out on the Darrell Fisher loop. The 60 mile ride will depart from Higher Gear Highland Park at 8am and average 19mph.

Tuesday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 9:30AM. The 1.5 hour ride is split into groups based on ability.

Women’s Clinic with Rahsaan Bahati. In place of this week’s Wednesday ride, we will have a clinic with Rahsaan Bahati. Join us for an evening of riding, skills and a Q&A with Bahati. The ride/clinic starts at 6PM, earlier than usual. Click here for all the event details. 

Fredo’s Ride.  Join Fredo on a fast paced group ride each Thursday night during the summer. The ride departs from HG Wilmette at 5:30PM and averages 20+mph. 

Events:

Winfield Criterium. This two day race series in the western burbs offers both and evening and day criterium. Both courses have a challenging hill, which always makes for an exciting race. For event details click here.

Vernon Hills Grand Prix. If you’re looking for a flat course, VHGP is your answer this weekend. For race details click here.

 

Coming Up:

 

Wrigleyville Road Tour. So many great things all rolled into one event! This century ride starts and ends in Wrigley Field and the ride benefits World Bicycle Relief and Chicago Cub Charities. For details click here

 

The 3rd Annual Tri Smart 101 – “Get Schooled” ride. This century ride honors the memory of Michelle Chaput. The event will be on Sunday, September 16. See the attachment for details.

Women’s Clinic with Rahsaan Bahati

Looking for a chance to learn a few riding and racing skills? Attend our Women’s Cycling Clinic with Rahsaan Bahati on Wednesday, August 15. The event will replace our regular Wednesday Women’s ride and start a half an hour earlier. See the details listed below.
Rides:
Sunday ride. This Sunday’s we’re going long! Join us for the Double Miller loop, which is an 80 mile westerly loop. The ride will depart from Higher Gear Highland Park at 8AM and average 19mph.
Tuesday Women’s ride. This ride departs from HG Wilmette at 9:30AM. The 1.5 hour ride is split into groups based on ability.
Wednesday Women’s ride. Join us for pacelines and group riding skills. The ride departs from HG HP at 6:30PM and will average above 17mph.

Tour of Elk Grove. This race is on the National Race Calendar, so there’ll be some heavy hitters tearing up the road this weekend. For details on all the races in the series click here
Dirt Days #5 & Palos Meltdown. Join the ladies for another exciting mountain bike ride. This week the ride will focus on the Palos Meltdown course in preparation for Sunday’s race. Two Rivers Road Race Looking to get another road race in before the summer racing season ends? Check out the Two Rivers race near Kankakee. The course is new this year, but my guess is that it’s relatively flat compared to most road races. For race details click here
Coming Up:
Winfield Criterium. This series features a twilight and day criterium – both of which have hills! It’s a great late season race series. For details click here.
Vernon Hills Grand Prix. This race is usually held in the spring, but this year, it’s late summer. The course is not too technical, so it’s a great course for beginners and experienced racers alike. For details click here.
Women’s Clinic with Rahsaan Bahati. Join us for a great evening with Rahsaan. The event will include a ride/clinic and a Q&A session with refreshments. The event is free, but donations to the Bahati Foundation are encouraged. For details click here
