Bike racing and group riding can be a little intimidating. Large groups riding shoulder to shoulder at a high rate of speed can look a little scary from the outside. I can tell you that with a little knowledge, you can build the confidence you need to absolutely love bike racing! In the Chicagoland area, there are a group of women bound and determined to get you over your fears and encourage you to love the sport as much as they do. Through get-togethers, clinics and information spread out through various mediums, they’re making it easy for you to step right in. Illinois Women Cyclists Spring Thaw Icebreaker – Want to meet local women cyclists and racers? Whether you’re new to the scene or have been around for a while, this event is designed to bring everyone together to share information on current opportunities and just enjoy the company of fellow riders. Chicago Bike Swap – Looking for that odd bike part or a good deal on cycling equipment, attend the Chicago Bike Swap on Saturday, March 9. The event is put on by the Active Transportation Alliance, which is a non-profit organization which promotes cycling and other outdoor activities. Half Acre Women’s/Girls/Trans Road Racing Clinic – Talk about a hot clinic, this event filled up within days! The clinic will cover the nuts and bolts of bike racing and it’s great for anyone interested in getting into bike racing. There is a waitlist, so if you’re interested, be sure to get on the waitlist as soon as possible. The event is free thanks to the Illinois Cycling Association. Women’s Track Cycling Clinic (Part 1) – Interested in learning how to ride a fixed gear bike or race at the velodrome? This series is designed to help you get your feet wet, build a little confidence and maybe start racing. The first event will be held on May 4th at the Northbrook Velodrome from 8A M to noon. The second event will be held at the Chicago Velo Campus. More details to follow.
