Women’s Spring Training Ride

ImageThe temperature is finally heading in the right direction. If you haven’t made it outside yet, this may be the weekend to take your bike on the road. If you’re looking for a little camaraderie, you’re in luck! Local women racers are leading a spring training ride. The ride is this Saturday and will depart from Chicago (Damen and Clybourn/Diversey) and head north to Highland Park. The ride speed will depend on the participants, but should average between 14-18 mph. For ride details, click here.

Events:

Spring Super Criterium – Head out to Blackhawk Farms Raceway in Beloit to be part of the first race in the 2013 Illinois Cup series. The race car track has some fun twists and turns that’ll add some excitement to the races. For more information, click here.

Kenosha Velosport Spring Training Races – Event #3 – The final event of this series is on Sunday, April 7. It’s an interesting course, so if you haven’t made it out for the previous events, you’ve got one last chance. Coming Up:

Women’s Track Cycling Clinic – Event #1. Join us for our annual women’s track cycling clinic and learn the basics of riding a fixed gear bike and riding and racing on a velodrome. The first event is at the Northbrook Velodrome, a beginner friendly track and a great place to get started. To register for the event, click here.

Women’s Track Cycling Clinic – Event #2.  The second clinic in this series will be held at the Chicago Velo Campus, a steeper, but thrilling place to ride. The clinic will include track certification as well as basic track riding skills and mock racing. For event details, click here.

Time Change Weekend

We’re another step closer to spring with the time change this weekend. Look forward to more light and rising temperatures in the coming weeks. Everything to get you race-ready is at your fingertips. Check out the jam packed events schedule listed below.
Events:
Chicago Bike Swap – Head out to the bike swap this Saturday morning for great deals and information on all things cycling related. The event is from 10-5 at the Physical Education Building at UIC. Interested in bike racing? Attend the Bike Racing Panel discussion at 1PM where Marie Snyder and I will represent women racers in the Chicago area. Women’s Weekend at Rays Indoor Mountain Bike Park – I attended this event last year and had so much fun and learned a ton. Pro mountain biker, Leigh Donovan will lead a team of instructors to help you with everything from rock gardens to the pump track and even jumps (jumps not required). Races:
Half Acre’s Gaper’s Block Crit Series – What better way to figure out this racing thing than practice, practice, practice and that’s what the Gapers Block Crits are all about. Kenosha Velosport Spring Criterium Training Races – More opportunities to practice crit racing before the season gets started. This series is for all levels and includes master’s fields. Hillsboro Roubaix – This is usually the big kickoff race for the road racing season. It’s a few weeks earlier this year, but the course will still be tough and the competition tougher! It’s a bit of a hike, so plan ahead. For race details click here https://www.bikereg.com/Net/17993.
ABD Indoor Timetrial Race #3 –This is the final indoor race of this series – time to head outside after this one! This course will be a 9K hill climb, great for testing your power to weight number. For race information click here http://www.ambikerace.com/2013/flyers/TT13_flyer.pdf.

No Excuses

Ladies Night OutIt’s March, a month that brings hope and excitement with longer days, the beginning of Spring and the start of the road racing season in Chicago. There are lots events planned over the next few weeks, all to get you out the door and on your bike. Here we go!
Events:
Spring Thaw Icebreaker- New to the racing scene? Come out to Bangers & Lace at 1670 W. Division from 6-8PM this Monday evening. The event will be a great time to meet and mingle with the women in the local racing scene. There’ll also be information about getting into racing and events coming up this season. Don’t miss out. Chicago Bike Swap – The bike swap in next Saturday at UIC. You can reserve a table to sell your equipment or you can search the tables for the parts you’re looking for. Women’s Night Out – This night is just for the ladies with special guest speakers, a flat tire clinic and lots of goodies! The event will be held on Wednesday, March 13 from 4-8PM at M&M Cyclery. Women’s Weekend at Rays Indoor Mountain Bike Park – Whether you’re a novice mountain biker or are more into the extreme stunts, Ray’s has everything for you! The women’s event is an event not to miss. There will be several pro women mountain bikers on hand to provide instruction and ride around with you. This year’s event is March 15-17. Half Acre’s Women & Transgender Racing Clinic. This clinic is sold out and that’s good and bad. We’re happy to see that so many women are interested in learning about bike racing, but we’re sad that for those who didn’t get in to this year’s clinic 
Women’s Track Cycling Clinic Series – The dates are set for this year’s Women’s Track Cycling Series. The first event will be held at the Northbrook Velodrome on Saturday, May 4 and will focus on the basics. The second event will be held at the Chicago Velo Campus and will include certification on the 166 meter, 53 degree banked track! The CVC clinic will be held on Saturday, June 15. More details to follow. Mark your calendars!!

Half Acre’s Gaper’s Block Crit Series – The women’s category 4 field is already sold out for this event, another fantastic victory for women’s cycling. There are still slots open in other fields and it would be a good idea to see if there’ll be a waitlist. Kenosha Velosport Spring Criterium Training Races- This is the series 34th annual event. Instead of the flat loop, which we used to race at Parkside College, the new course features a rolling landscape.
