Franco Panveno Master’s Cup

FrancoThis weekend we celebrate the life of a wonderful cycling friend, Franco Panveno. His untimely passing in November of last year left most of us in shock and incredibly sad. He was a character to say the least, but he was a friend to everyone. Each Thursday evening in the summer he’d head out to race at the Northbrook Velodrome. He’d set up camp in the infield complete with seating, a blanket or two, a gear bag filled with every possible piece of clothing, parts and tools to take care of any adjustment or emergency. He’d also have one bike set up to ride in-between races and one bike to race. All of that may seem somewhat normal, but then there was his food and that is just another story all together! We miss our Franco and this weekend we’ll celebrate by racing in the inaugural Franco Panveno Cup. Check the details below for details on this special event and race.

Events:
Windfield Criteriums – It seems like yesterday this was a brand new race series, but time does have a way of slipping by and this series is now considered a bit of a classic! The courses have a few hills to mix things up, but smart racing can still be the winning ticket. Head out to Oakwood Park on Saturday and Creekside Park on Sunday for some fun racing. Franco Panveno Memorial Master’s Cup- This is a two day Master’s track event at the Northbrook Velodrome. Saturday features timed events and Sunday the mass start races will take place. There’s a lot of great action ahead! For more information on the event, click here http://www.northbrookvelodrome.org/francocup.

Spring Prairie Road Race – The Wisconsin State Road Race Championship is this Sunday and it’s being held on the beautiful, but painfully hilly course in southern Wisconsin. There is one major climb with an 18% grade (ouch), several rollers, false flats and most likely cross winds. Are you up for the challenge? US Master’s Track Nationals – There’ll be a lot of action on the track in Indianapolis, but it won’t be cars, but track bikes. The Master’s Track Nationals will be held July 30th through August 4th at the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis. Several local riders will be participating in the events, so we’re hoping to bring a little hardware back to Chicago! Coming up:
Tour of Elk Grove – It’s another big series for Chicagoland! For the women’s pro ½ field, there is a stage race option including Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In addition, there is a women’s open race on Saturday for all women’s categories. The course is known for is long straightaways and hairpin turn. It’ll be fast and fun! Bryce Master 19K Time Trial – It’s not your average time trial distance, but it’s still about speed. The race is located in Harvard, IL and it’s another great option for challenging yourself to push yourself to the limit.
