Chi-Cross Cup Begins

fall colorsEarlier this week I attended the End of Summer Patio Party & Jersey Swap. Although the road season is barely over, it was great to catch up with a few of my favorite racers (without being dressed in lycra) and it was a chance to meet some very enthusiastic riders and new racers. I left the event feeling inspired and so happy! There’s so much promise in the future of women’s cycling and events like this certainly builds the momentum to keep our great sport going and growing. Yay!

While it’s great to dream of all the fun you can have on a bike, it’s also great to get out and participate. Below is a list of events happening in our area. Get out and have some fun on your bike!

Events:
ABD Fall Fling – The Fall Fling continues week with two criteriums at the Dupage Business Park. Both courses offer a change in elevation and Sunday’s course includes a 180 degree turn. The courses are closed to traffic and other than the 180 degree turn, they’re pretty wide open. Come out for some light-hearted competition and a good workout! For information, click here http://www.abdcycling.com/events/fling.html.

Chi-cross Cup Series Race #1 – There’s a lot of buzz on the street about the start of the cross season. Jackson Park is a favorite because of its location on the city’s south side and because it’s the kick-off race. Check out all the action! For race information, click here http://chicrosscup.com/schedule/.

Fun Race Day – Looking for one more day of track racing? The Chicago Velo Campus is hosting a Fun Race Day this Sunday. The event will begin with a flying lap to determine race groups and races will consist of sprints, a scratch race, miss n out, a keirin and a points race – whew! For more information, follow the link to their Facebook event page. https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/651667118199042/?ref_dashboard_filter=calendar

Coming up:
Bike the Ridge – Get your chance to ride on Ridge Road in Evanston at this annual cycling event. The non-competitive, city-sponsored event will be held on September 29 between 9AM and 1PM. For details, click here http://www.cityofevanston.org/festivals-concerts/bike-the-ridge/.

Take a Mom Mountain Biking Day – This event has fun written all over it! All are welcome from beginners to experienced riders. The event will be held at the Diamond Lake Sports Complex on October 5th. The event is co-sponsored by M&M Cyclery, IMBA, and the Mundelein Park District. For more information go to the Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=10151870608408252&set=oa.638794576153056&type=1&theater

LSD TTT – Just when you thought the road season was over, there’s one more race! This one is to celebrate the opening of the extension of Lakeshore drive on the south side. It’s a team time trial, with both aero and Eddy Mercyx style (non-aero) divisions. The course is only 5.2K, so it’ll be fast and fun. Fall Fling

FallI’ve been in denial for the last few weeks, unable to come to terms with summer turning to fall. But alas, there’s no hiding the fact that the days are much shorter, the leaves are starting to turn and the temperatures are beginning to drop. While nothing compares to training in the summer sun, there are still plenty of options to continue riding when it’s dark and there’s a chill in the air. Invest in a good set of lights (front and rear) and add a few layers and you should be good-to-go!

Riding during the week may add a few challenges to your summer routine, but the weekend still offers plenty of sun-filled options. Check below for all your cycling opportunities.

Events:
ABD Fall Cycling Fling – As fall begins this weekend, so does the Fall Fling racing series. Tomorrow’s race is a criterium at Pella Windows in West Chicago. The course looks like a big oval, so it’s not very technical! Sunday’s race is a time trial beginning at Maple Park (near Dekalb). The course is approximately 9.5 miles and includes two 180 degree turnarounds (more technical than the crit!). In all races, participants can compete by age group or race category. For more information, click here http://www.abdcycling.com/events/fling.html.

North Shore Century – Take your summer fitness and enjoy a longer ride on the first day of fall. This event offers multiple ride distances and is fully supported. Whether you’re looking to head out for a relaxed ride or conquer the goal of 100 miles, this event surely has what you’re looking for. For details on the event, click here http://www.evanstonbikeclub.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=690768&module_id=133508.

End of Summer Patio Party & Jersey Swap – The great thing about being a female cyclist in our area is the level of commitment and camaraderie from fellow cyclists and racers. Whether you’re new to the sport, a seasoned veteran or just curious, Tuesday’s event is all about hanging out, talking about your favorite sport and having a couple of good laughs. The event will be held at Happy Village from 7-10. Come out and join us! Coming up:
ABD Fall Fling – The Fall Fling continues next week with two criteriums at the Dupage Business Park. It’s the last of the road season around here, so if you’re looking for a few more races, this is your chance. For information, click here http://www.abdcycling.com/events/fling.html.

Chi-cross Cup Series Race #1 – Okay, here’s that denial thing again! It’s fall and ready or not, it’s cyclo-cross season. The Chi-cross cup is an amazing series and it kicks off with a race in the city – Jackson Park. For race information, click here http://chicrosscup.com/schedule/.

Kit up and Chat Ride – The annual Project 5 Racing team Kit up an Chat Ride is Saturday, October 12. It’s always a great ride and the post ride lunch is always a great time to catch up and share stories of the cycling season. Mark your calendars and plan on joining in on all the fun. Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival

chequmegon flying monkeys signThis week’s post comes to you from the great North Woods! I’m up in Hayward Wisconsin for the 31st annual Chequamegon Fat Tire festival. Three thousand riders will compete in either the Short n Fat (16 miles) or the Chequamegon 40 mile mountain bike race, each beginning at 10AM tomorrow morning. They’re not the most technical courses, but they can be exhausting as riders go over the rolling grassy hills of the famed Bierkebeiner ski course, fire roads and snow mobile trails. To keep things “lite”, the promoters put up odd signs which the racers look forward to seeing as they suffer through the miles. Some of the favorites are the flying monkeys, the Sasquatch or bear crossings signs. There’s a great sense of accomplishment for completing the events and the local communities couldn’t be more welcoming. For me, it’s the perfect way to end my cycling season.

At home there are still lots of events including races, rides and clinics. Check below for all your options.

MATTS Season Finale TT – Head out to the final time trial in the MATTS series this Saturday in Garden Prairie, IL.
