This week’s post comes to you from the great North Woods! I’m up in Hayward Wisconsin for the 31st annual Chequamegon Fat Tire festival. Three thousand riders will compete in either the Short n Fat (16 miles) or the Chequamegon 40 mile mountain bike race, each beginning at 10AM tomorrow morning. They’re not the most technical courses, but they can be exhausting as riders go over the rolling grassy hills of the famed Bierkebeiner ski course, fire roads and snow mobile trails. To keep things “lite”, the promoters put up odd signs which the racers look forward to seeing as they suffer through the miles. Some of the favorites are the flying monkeys, the Sasquatch or bear crossings signs. There’s a great sense of accomplishment for completing the events and the local communities couldn’t be more welcoming. For me, it’s the perfect way to end my cycling season.
At home there are still lots of events including races, rides and clinics. Check below for all your options.
