Welcome 2014

Welcome 2014As we wrap up 2013, we can reflect on another great cycling season in Chicago. It was pretty much non-stop from the early season races (in and outdoor) to main events of the summer and then throughout the entire fall with the fastest growing cycling discipline – cyclo-cross. I hope it’s been a good year for you and that you are well on your way to planning for the 2014 season.

In this final weekend of the year, we have been given the gift of warm(er) weather. Take advantage of the almost spring-like temps we’ll have this weekend and ride outside! Next week it’s back to the cold stuff and although there are many brave souls in this area, not everybody wants to ride outside when it’s freezing!

Here’s what’s coming up in the next few weeks:
Cyclo-Cross National Championships – Still one more major series left to go! The national championships for cyclo-cross are being held in Boulder, Colorado from January 8-12. The races will be held at Valmont Bike Park which is an outdoor bike park which has everything from basic trails to extreme jumps. The cross course will be challenging, but I’m pretty sure there won’t be any jumps.  For information about the event, click herehttps://www.usacycling.org/myusac/include/cms/schedule/index.php?mode=view&permit=2014-1%20 .

Annual Women’s Dinner – Don’t miss out on all the fun at this annual event. It’s a great time to catch up with all your cycling friends – without lycra and a helmet! The event is open to all women cyclists. Whether you’re a commuter, triathlete, bike racer or want to get into the sport, this event is all about you! Details are as follows:
• Saturday, January 18th at 7PM
• Kathy Corbett’s home – 1616 Woodlawn Avenue, Glenview
• Cost is $30.00 which includes dinner and awards (Kathy will have vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options, but if you have any special dietary needs, please let me know)

Winter Solstice

wintersolstice1The Winter Solstice is upon us and that’s great news. Sure, we’ll have to deal with winter for the next few months, but each day after December 21st, the days will get longer. I love it!! Seems like we’ve had a bit of winter already, but this week has been a little confusing, weather-wise. Snow and cold, rain and warmer temps and tomorrow – ice. While this will make most people train inside, there’ll be a hearty few that’ll be out there battling the elements for fun and a chance for glory. Check out what’s up this weekend is Chicagoland below.

Events:
Toys for Tots Computrainer Races -Looking for a little motivation to get you through this evening’s workout? Challenge yourself to a computrainer race at HPI Chicago. The event starts at 6pm this evening and it’s free if you donate a toy. For details, click on this Facebook link https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/1406470832924421/?ref_dashboard_filter=calendar

Afterglow – If you enjoy a Belgian-esque style race, you’ll want to head out to the Afterglow race in Douglas Park tomorrow. Most of the snow has melted, leaving soggy grass, chilly temps and a little moisture. Doesn’t get more Belgian than that! For more information, click here https://www.bikereg.com/Net/afterglow.

Coming Up:

Illinois State Cyclo-Cross Championships

snowmanThe cold weather has come in just in time for the State Championship Cyclo-Cross races. But never has a cold day deterred the competitive spirit of the hearty Chicago racers. Last year the weather was balmy, but I’d have to say that’s not the norm for this championship. More often than not, the temps range from the single digits to the mid-teens and of course, snow is often a feature. Teams will bring out tents, heaters, grills and other tools to keep warm and the atmosphere will be buzzing with excitement.

Whatever your choice for riding is this weekend, know that there is still plenty of action around here. Check below for a few of the upcoming events.

Events:Chi-cross Cup 10 year Anniversary Party – Cyclo-cross in Chicago is huge, but it is so thanks to the efforts of the Chi-Cross Cup promoters and all of the super-enthusiastic riders. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the series, the Bonebell is hosting a party. There’ll be food, music, drinks and PRIZES! Don’t miss out! For details, click here https://www.facebook.com/events/660599453962753/

State Cyclo-Cross Championships – It’s a two day affair for the State Cross Championships held at Montrose and the Lakefront. The course outline is similar to previous years, but with the weather coming in this weekend, it’s anyone’s guess what the course will really be like. How much sand will riders have to contend with? Only Mother Nature knows! Whether you compete or just spectate, Montrose is always fun. For event details, click here http://chicrosscup.com/.

Coming Up:
Midwest Regional Cyclo-Cross Championships – Don’t put the cross bikes away just yet, there’s still plenty of big racing ahead. Next week is the Midwest Championships to be held at the Dan Ryan Woods in the Beverly neighborhood. This course is used in the early cross season and it’s a favorite of many. What will the course look like on December 21st? That’s anyone’s guess! For race information, click here https://www.bikereg.com/Net/midwest-regional-cyclo-cross-championships.

Annual Women’s End of the Season Dinner – When all the racing is done for the season, there’s no better way to reminisce on all the fun then attending the Women’s Dinner. Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 18. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

Have a great weekend!
