Groundhogs Day

ground-hog-dayThis Sunday is Groundhogs Day and all I have to say is, Punxsutawney Phil better make sure he gets things right! It has been a long winter so far and we’ve had to deal with a lot of snow and really cold temps. As cyclists, we are dreaming of the warmer and sunnier days ahead. Hope it won’t be long! Even with the cold, there are still plenty of things to look forward to. In the off-season, we can work on our base miles and work on any ailments we’re dealing with. We can also plan ahead for a season full of races. Read on for what’s ahead.

ABD Indoor TT Series Race #2 – This race was added to the indoor series and unlike the other courses where there is plenty of climbing, this one is downhill! Come on out and test your fitness or challenge your competitors. For details on the event, click here

2014 UCI World Championships – The 2014 UCI World Cyclocross Championships are being held in Hoogerheide in the Netherlands on February 1st and 2nd. It’s not likely that many of us will be able to hop over there to see the action, but Universal Sports will be airing the championships live online as well as replaying them on TV starting on Monday. For viewing information, click here Go USA!

Coming up:
Kenosha Velosport Spring Crit Series – It’s not too late to plan ahead for the racing season. For those wanting to get a jump on their season, the Kenosha Velosport crit series is a great place to start. The dates have just been published and they are, March 16th, 23rd and 30th. Information on courses and race times will follow in the coming weeks. Think Spring!!

Yoga for Cyclists – Riding a bike can cause stiffness and tension, learn how to loosen up! Are your quads tight from all that grinding (or spinning)? Shoulders tense? Neck got a crick in it? Lower back achy? Jaw clenched from growling at all those drivers who cut you off? As any cyclist knows, riding a bike is liberating! It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you’re peddling under your own power with the wind in your hair (or scalp). But as we also know, riding a bike can cause imbalances in the body that can lead to stiffness, tension and if we are not careful, injury.
Dates: Wednesdays: March 12th and 19th
Time: 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $35 if registered in advance by March 9th, $40 thereafter. Drop in for a single session for $20
Location: Bloom Yoga Studio 4663 N Rockwell Chicago, IL (across the street from the Rockwell Brown line CTA stop)
Register on-line at or call 773-463-YOGA (9642) The program is designed for cyclists and no previous yoga experience is required.

In the news:
50 Influential Women – A few of our local women were featured in Bicycle Retailer Magazine as 50 Influential women in cycling. It’s great for women to keep moving us forward, but it’s really special when you know them and why and how they do so much for our sport. Congratulation to Chris Raymo, Joan Hanscom and Leah Missbach Day! Your recognition is well-deserved. To view the article, click here .
Have a great weekend!

Bone Chilling Cold

SnowWhat a difference a week makes! Last weekend the weather was almost balmy and perfect for getting out on the road for one more ride in 2013. This week only the brave have battled the cold and snow on their bikes (I have seen a few). For the rest of us, it’s indoor city! Hopefully with a complete set of goals on your list, you’ll have all the motivation you need to keep pedaling!

Events:Cyclo-Cross National Championships – Boulder is the place to be, at least from January 8-12! Not only is it hosting this year’s national cross championships, but the weather forecast is pretty darn sweet (unless you like all the cold and snow we have around here). Good luck to all the local racers headed out to Colorado. With such a terrific series we have in Chicago, we’re certain to have a few places on the national podium. For more information on the championship series held in Valmont Bike Park, click here
