Hillsboro Roubaix

cobblestone road

The racing has already started for some Chicago-area racers. Many headed south for the Joe Martin State race in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The series offers category and age group options for women, which is practically unheard of in our area. The courses are challenging, and the competition is always tough, but it’s an excellent event and it’s a smooth operation. Think about it for next year and wish all the Chicago area racers well this year. For up-to-date information on the stages, click here http://www.joemartinstagerace.com/.

Races – This Weekend:
Hillsboro Roubaix –Hillsboro is the first road race in Illinois new Pave Liga series. The race is located near St Louis and it offers some wide-open, typically windy sections of road, leaving racers battling it out for good position. It’s also one of the longer road races around, so it’s a bit of a gem for the Midwest. For race information, click here https://www.bikereg.com/22460.

Andres Park

It’s going to be a quiet weekend on the race front, but the weather forecast is bright, so it’ll be a great time to get out and ride. There’s plenty to do outdoors, so get out and enjoy a great weekend. Read on for details…

We Need Your Vote!
CAMBr (Chicago Area Mountain Bikers) is in the running to receive a trail building grant for one of their exciting new efforts in the NW suburbs – Andres Park. All you need to do to help out is log onto the web site on April 21st and vote for them.

The project is important for a few reasons:
1 It adds trail riding opportunities to the NW suburbs that do not exist today.
2 It alleviates the pressure on the Palos System, which due to a lack of other trails sees rider numbers well above what is recommended and sustainable.

For more information on Andres Park and to vote, click here http://www.andrespark.org/.

Women’s Events:

BFF Women’s Sunday Rides – Starting this Sunday, this women’s specific shop will be leading weekly group rides. The rides will depart the shop at 8am Sunday mornings. For more information, click here http://www.bffbikes.com/calendar.html

Races – Coming up:

Hillsboro Roubaix – Paris Roubaix was last weekend, but in the Midwest we have our own version of the cobbled road race. It’s a great course with all the elements of the European classic, but it’s much closer. For race information, click here https://www.bikereg.com/22460.

Whitnall Park Criterium – This is one of my favorite crit courses. It’s located in a park near Milwaukee and the race runs loops around the perimeter. There’s a fair amount of climbing, but not too much. The downhill is fast with a sweeping right turn – lots of fun! For more information, click here https://s3.amazonaws.com/USACFlyers/FL_2014-815.pdf.

Have a great weekend!Dig This

Lincoln Park Criterium

Last week’s Super Crit was so much fun. There were two good-sized, local women’s fields; a great triumph for those of us who have been around for a few years. Both fields had competitive depth with teams and individuals vying for control of the field and the win. Things look positive for a repeat of the action this weekend and the weather looks promising as well. Spring & Summer season, here we come!!
Events:
Lincoln Park Criterium – The Lincoln Park criterium is this Saturday in Chicago. Located at Montrose and the Lakefront, it doesn’t get much closer to home. There are two women’s races; the Category 4 field and the open. The open race is a memorial for one of the team’s fallen riders, Beth Kobeszka. She was a young and vibrant woman who passed in a tragic cycling accident a few years back. Honor her memory by getting out there and doing exactly what she would be doing if she were here – racing! For event details, click .
Big Ring Flyers – A return to Cherry Valley 20K time trial. This is an out and back course starting at Deer Run Forest Preserve. For details on the event, click .
Coming Up:
Spring Cleaning Jersey & Clothing Swap – This is another get-together for women cyclists. Join friends for snacks, conversation and the chance to swap out some of your cycling clothing. For details on the event, click .
Mark your Calendar:
Women’s track cycling Clinic – Interested in learning to ride a track bike or race at the Velodrome? Attend this women’s only clinic at Northbrook. The event will be held on Saturday, May 3. For details on this and other events at the Northbrook Velodrome, click .

Women’s News:
As women and athletes we continue to strive for equality. We’ve come a long way, thanks to the efforts of those before us. The following is a story of a women’s bike racing team in Afghanistan and their struggles to merely be allowed to ride a bike. Click to read the story.
Have a great weekend!

The Racing Season is Heating Up

The temps may still be a little lower than we’d like, but the racing season is certainly starting to heat up. The Gapers Block beginner criterium series wrapped up yesterday, and there’s quite a bit of buzz about all the action that took place on the south side. Moving forward the months seem to be filling up. Get ready, here we go!

Events:
Spring Super Criterium – You may not be Mario Andretti, but you’ll certainly have your chance to pretend at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. Tomorrow’s criterium is the inaugural race in the Pave Liga series as well as the first race of the 2014 Illinois Cup. Get ahead of the game and head out to South Beloit for a great race. For details on the event, click here https://www.bikereg.com/supercrit7/

Indoor Time Trial Series – This final race of this TT series is the John Frasier Memorial time trial. It’s is a 10 mile course which begins in Maple Park, IL. For details, click here http://www.midamericatimetrialseries.com//2014_ttseriesv3.pdf

Coming up:
Lincoln Park Criterium – Racing doesn’t get much closer than Lincoln Park, so there are no excuses for not coming out. The course features a few long straight-aways, a couple of not-so-technical corners and one hairpin turn. What may be a bigger factor in the race is the wind, as the course is right along the lakefront. For details on the event or to register, click here. https://www.bikereg.com/23086

Big Ring Flyers – A return to Cherry Valley 20K time trial. This is an out and back course starting at Deer Run Forest Preserve. For details on the event, click here http://www.midamericatimetrialseries.com//Cherry_Valley_Flyer_2014_m_2-21.pdf

Mark your Calendar:
Women’s track cycling Clinic – Mark your calendars! This year’s women’s beginner track cycling clinic will be held at the Northbrook Velodrome. The event will be held on Saturday, May 3. For details on this and other events at the Northbrook Velodrome, click here http://www.northbrookcyclecommittee.org/
