Braver Than The Elements

Rapha Braver Than The Elements

It might be tough to decide what cycling event to participate in this weekend. Both the Rapha Ride and the Afterglow cross race are on Saturday and each promotes something pretty terrific. Whatever you choose, feel lucky you’re riding outside in the final few weeks of December, in Chicago, and it’s not all that bad!

Sunday is the Winter solstice, which shifts us into the winter season. It also brings us a little more light each day – certainly something to look forward to.

Events:

Rapha Women’s Ride – Braver than the Elements – Rumor has it, this bunch of ladies is going to put some miles in tomorrow! With the weather is cooperating in Chicago, it’s bound to be a great event. The ride begins early tomorrow morning, but there’s still a chance to be a part. Don’t delay any more if you want to participate. For details, click here.

Afterglow a Cyclocross Race – This race is for the die-hard racers who just want to have fun and enjoy a little competition. It’s also a great opportunity for those planning on heading to Nationals to keep that mental toughness for the competition ahead. The race will be held on the Douglas Park golf course at Ogden and California in the City. Come out and race and contribute to West Town Bikes and Blackstone Bicycle Works, which are cycling programs for inner city youth. For details on the event, click here.

Coming Up:

Cyclo-cross National Championships – This year’s Cyclo-cross National Championships will be held in Austin, Texas from January 7th through the 11th. Seems like a great get-away in a cool town and it’ll be warmer than Chicago! The competition should be fierce, but it’ll be fun! For details on the event, click here.

Women’s Dinner- Mark your calendars for this year’s women’s dinner which will be held at Master’s World Champion, Leigh Thompson’s home in Winnetka. The dinner will be held on Saturday, January 24th. More details to follow.

Have a wonderful holiday and a great weekend!

Miller Park Reindeer vs Midwest Championships

Miller Park Reindeer

For some of us, last month’s weather really put the fear in us that we were locked in for a long indoor training season. Not so! The weather outside is downright delightful and perfect for getting in miles on the road or trail. Don’t waste valuable time because you never know when the cold and dreary will be back to spoil our outdoor fun. Lots of great events this weekend and in the near future. See the details below to see what your options are!

Events:

Milwaukee Bike Swap – In the market for a new-to-you bike, bike parts or accessories? Bike swaps are the perfect venue to get in some great cycling shopping. Get in early for the best finds. It’s a short drive to Milwaukee, but its well worth the effort. For details on the event, click here.

Miller Chill Cyclocross Race – This race is held in one of Bloomington’s best known parks, Miller Park. The course features paved sections, sand, woods and a bridge, which is used as a flyover. It’s about a 2 hour drive to this event, and it’ll probably have the feel of a good local race. For more information, click here.

Midwest Regional Cyclocross Championships – This year the Midwest Regional cross championships will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The course utilizes the varying landscape of John Ball Park, including a small bowl and a challenging uphill.  You can get a preview of the course during Saturday’s race and then go full steam for the championships on Sunday. For more information, click here.

State Championship Weekend

It’s a State Championship kind of weekend in this part of the Midwest. Saturday’s the big day for our neighbors to the north, with the Wisconsin State Championships being held in Milwaukee. Sunday is the big day for Illinois, with our State Championships being held at Montrose and the Lakefront. We’ve been given a great weekend for riding and racing, so enjoy whatever you do outside this weekend!

Events:

Wisconsin State Cyclocross Championships – The Wisconsin State Championships are being held in Dretzka Park, which is located on the north of side of Milwaukee. This park is also a golf course, so you know there’ll be sand, but there are plenty of trees and hills to make this course fun and challenging. Use this as a prep for Sunday, or make it your race for the weekend. For race information, click here.

Chicross Cup Race Series #11 – The final event in this series is the Illinois State Championships, at Montrose Harbor. Unlike the frozen tundra we’ve experienced on this course in the past, this year the course should be softer and maybe even a little muddy. Mud or not, the racers will still have to contend with the sand, long straight-aways, and of course, Cricket Hill. It’ll be a great day of racing and spectating and it’s close to home! For details, click here.
