The momentum has really picked up for Chicago area cyclists. Last Saturday the lakefront was buzzing with racers competing in the Lincoln Park Crit and the action has continued all week with the Gapers Block series. Even with the crazy weather, the races still played out. There’s no sign of slowing down with a full line-up of events headed our way. See the listings below for cycling opportunities.

Events:

Spring Super Criterium – Get your engines started, it’s time for the Spring Super Crit at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. This course will make you feel like Speed Racer as you whirl through its twists and turns. Plan to make your way out to race and then stay for the skills clinic and make it a great bike racing day. For more information on the event, click here.

CWEC’s Development Series Event #2-Want to improve your confidence on the bike? Attend this skills clinic and practice everything from balancing to bumping –safely! The clinic is in conjunction with the Super Crit and will be held on-site beginning at 12:15. Registration will be open up to 10 minutes before the start. For more information, click here.

John Fraser Memorial Time Trial – This is the final race in the indoor series – and it’s outside! The course is 10k with double 180’s. This course is almost guaranteed to be windy as there is little shelter from the wind as you pass by empty cornfields. If you’re up for a challenge, this event is for you! For information on the race, click here.

Greg Bednorski Memorial Crit #1–If you’re looking for more crit action on Sunday, head north to Madison. The course is located in a business park and the roads are pretty wide open and not too technical. It’s a great course for the start of the season. For more information, click here.

Coming Up:

Hillsboro Roubaix –Each spring, cyclists flock to the southern Illinois town of Hillsboro to compete in one of the biggest road races in the state. This year there will be a combined women’s field, but categories will be scored separately. All women will ride the 29 mile loop. For information on the event, click here.

Menomonee Park Criterium –This race is run on a non-technical loop surrounding a park, so it’s free from the distractions of city courses. It’s also great for newer riders, but fun for everyone. For information on the event, click here.

Cherry Valley 20K TT – You’ll get off to a good start in this race when you begin just after a bumpy set of railroad tracks. You’ll also be treated to shelter from trees instead of cornfields. The challenges will come in the form of rolling hills and chip and seal pavement. It’s a local favorite, so if you’re looking to improve your time trial skills, make sure to take part. For information on the event, click here.

Women’s Track Cycling Clinic – Interested in learning how to ride a track bike or race on a velodrome? Attend this annual women’s clinic and learn everything from the basics to racing strategy. The event is free for any junior rider, thanks to the Cuttin Crew race team! For details on the event, click here. If you need to borrow a loaner bike for the event, check out the google doc on the facebook event page to access available bikes.
