Blustery Cycle of Changing Seasons

What a difference a week makes in our fine city. Last Friday, the wind that brought in the warm temps was so powerful that a ride around town was quite a risky ordeal. During the week, the warm weather left and winter returned. Luckily this crazy cycle is whisking in spring-like temperatures again this weekend. Don’t let the opportunity to get in a solid outdoor ride escape. Get out the door and ride this weekend. Check the listings below for nearby cycling events.

Events:

Winter Bike Art Show Closing Party – Attend the closing party for this year’s Winter Bike Art Show. The party is this evening. For details on the event, click here.

Hugh Jass Fat Bike Series Event VII – The finale in this lighthearted fat tire bike race series is this tomorrow. This race will be held at the Riverview Gardens in Appleton, Wisconsin, so get a jump on your weekend and head up today. For details on the event, click here.

Intent Indoor Time Trial Series #4 – This is the fourth of five indoor races in this series. If you’re going for the overall, you need to participate in at least three events, so plan on heading out this weekend to guarantee your spot in the overall. Event #4 will feature a 20K course with rolling hills. For more information on the event, click here.

Women’s Weekend at Ray’s – Women’s Weekend is next Friday, so reserve your spot now for a fun weekend of indoor mountain biking with coaching and tips from Leigh Donovan and her team. The 2016 (unofficial) Illinois State Goldsprint Championships –This lighthearted sprint tournament is a fundraiser for the Ed Rudolph Velodrome. The tournament is Saturday, March 5th at 7PM and will be held at Chrome Chicago. Bring your sprinting legs, your favorite competitor(s) and compete for glory and prizes. Kenosha Velosport Spring Training Criteriums – You know spring is right around the corner when this long-running series begins. In its 37th year this series has helped many riders get their road season off to a good start. The race dates are March 13, 20th and April 3rd.  For series information, click here.

Planning Your Cycling Season

The weekend’s warm weather should have you dreaming of the upcoming road racing season. The season is closer than you think, with spring races coming in just a few weeks. Have you made a list of your goals for the season? Do you know how to plan and train for your goals? Help is here with a season planning clinic put on by the CWEC. Events:

Winter Bike Swap – In its 6th year, this annual bike swap offers up a bit of a twist to the traditional bike swap. It’s held at Jaks Tap in the west loop and there’ll be bikes, gear, socializing and networking with a good representation from all parts of the cycling community. CWEC Clinic Series Event #1 – Looking to have a successful cycling season? That takes goals and planning. If you’re looking for help in the process, attend this “Planning a Season” clinic tomorrow at Ancien Cycles. The clinic will begin at 3PM. For information, click here.

ABD Indoor Time Trial Series Race #3 – It’s back to a flat 10K course, which will be great for those able to push a big gear and might be challenged a bit by going uphill. Keep building your fitness and your overall points in the MATT’s series! For race information, click here.

A Cyclists Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is all about the heart. Typically candy, cards and a night out with your sweetie is what it takes to make your heart happy. Cyclists have another view on how to have a happy heart and that is to ride. Make sure your heart is happy and strong and get in your riding this weekend. Fat Cupid Classic – Valentine’s Day doesn’t get much better than this! Take part in this fat tire race which takes place on groomed cross country ski trails. The race is located in Appleton, Wisconsin, so there’s a bit of a drive ahead for this sweetheart event. For race details, click here.

Intent’s Indoor It Takes Two Time Trial – Partner up for this 15K time trial event on Valentine’s Day. Your combined team time will go up against other paired riders to see who has the fastest time of the day. For race information, click here.

Women in Cycling Film Viewing – Attend this mini film festival and discussion celebrating women in cycling, sponsored by Women Bike Chicago and Greeline Wheels. The event will be held at Greenline Wheels in Oak Park on Tuesday, February 16 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. For more information, click here.

Early Spring Predictions

Punxsutawney Phil

To the excitement of many, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from Gobblers Knob without seeing a shadow, thus predicting an early spring! Whether you believe in the forecast or not, the weather will warm enough to get outside and ride this weekend. There are not too many events this weekend, but it’s easy enough to join a group or take your training on the road. Have fun!

Events:

Bumble Bounce – There may not be a frozen tundra, but you still may find the Bumble creature out on course for tomorrow’s fat tire race. The race is located in Port Washington, Wisconsin, so it’s just north of Milwaukee. Head north for some fat tire fun. For race information, click here.
