Al Stern Road Race

And just like that, September comes to a close! We’ve enjoyed a summer-like September, but that all seems to be changing with the cooler temps and rain rolling in. The weather will be perfect for all the cycling activities this weekend. For those heading out on the road for some serious miles, the cooler temps will be welcome and the cross racers will be licking their chops for the potential to have another mud fest. Welcome to October and more fun ahead in the fall season of cycling.

Events:

Al Stern Marathon Road RaceAl Stern has been a fixture in the cycling community for a long time. He’s known for his ability to cover the distance, so it’s only fitting that this race would have his name on it. This road race course is flat, but you can be certain there’ll be wind. Depending on your race category, you may compete in distances ranging from 54 to 119 miles. For race information, click here.

Pumpkin Pie Century – What could be better than your favorite fall treat and a bike ride? This fully supported event has 25, 45, 63 and 100 mile options. The ride begins in Ottawa, which is near Starved Rock. Get out and enjoy the scenery. For event details, click here.

Chicross Cup Event #2 – The series starts up again as we head to Hopkins Park near Dekalb. The course is a figure 8 configuration with a flyover as its main feature. The course also includes a short section of single-track, some off camber sections and some open grassy sections. For race information, click here.

Coming Up:

Grafton Pumpkin Cross – This cross race is a celebration of the season. The race course features the challenges of a big climb, a slalom descent and gravel. Post-race festivities include a food truck, music, beer and pumpkins. For more information, click here.

Chicross Cup Event #3 – Next week’s race is back in the city. You’ll head to the Dan Ryan woods on south side. This course offers climbing and some fast descents. There are also flat open areas, a section that winds through the trees and a set of flagstone steps to run up. For more information, click here.

Rapha Chicago – Chicago is getting its very own Rapha store! Plan on coming out for the grand opening festivities. There’ll be guest appearances as well as cocktails and Half Acre Beer. Jingle Cross

It’s the last full weekend in September and it still feels like summer! Get out, enjoy the great weather and take part in all the cycling community has to offer. There are options for every type of rider. Check below for options in our area.

Events:

Jingle Cross – They’re off to a soggy start at the races in Iowa, which, by cross racers standards, creates the perfect course conditions. This is an epic weekend of racing with all levels, including UCI competing. The races have already started today and will continue on Saturday and Sunday as well. For event information, click here.

Fall Fling Continues– The series continues this weekend with one more criterium and a time trial. Saturday’s race is labeled a circuit course, as it is the longest of the three criteriums. The time trial is 9.5 miles with two 180 degree turns, so it’ll be fast and a little technical. For series information, click here.

Apple Cider Century – In its 43rd year, this century ride highlights the beautiful roads of southwest Michigan. There are multiple route options, including flat or hilly routes. It’s a fully supported event and of course, there’ll be apple cider! For event information, click here.

Kickstand Classic –Looking for a new concept in bike racing – one where it doesn’t matter if you’re dressed in spandex or your comfy jeans? Head out to Bartlett for an exciting day of racing where you’ll compete in groups of similarly matched abilities in either a 10, 14.5 or 19 mile race. It’s all about fun and it’s a fundraiser for the Active Transportation Alliance. For event information, click here.

Fall Fling

We’ve crossed the midway point in September and the riding options are noticeably different from just a few weeks ago. For the racers, we’re charging into cyclo-cross season and for those looking to wind down from a busy road racing season or for the recreational rider, there are lots of century ride options. Check below for local options.

Events:

Trek CX Cup – It’s a big cross weekend in Waterloo, with events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday! Today they’ll have a clinic for women category 4 and junior riders. Tomorrow and Sunday the racing gets underway with both UCI and amateur level races. It’s an action-packed weekend from start to finish! For event information, click here.

Fall Fling – This series wraps up the local criterium racing for the season. If you’ve still got some road racing left in you, head out to this series in the western suburbs. The series consists of three criteriums and one time trial, held over two weekends. For series information, click here.

Northshore Century – A local favorite for this time of the year! This fully supported ride begins in Evanston, and riders can choose from 25 50, 62 and 100 miles – which will get you all the way to Kenosha and back. For ride information, click here.

Coming Up:

Jingle Cross – The 2016 cyclo-cross season is getting off to a blazing start with back-to-back UCI races. The second of the heavy hitters is Jingle Cross, which is typically held in late November. There may be a little less ho-ho-ho this year, but the racing will be just as spectacular. For event information, click here.

Team Time Trial

We’ve got a lot on the schedule for the next few weeks as we head into the fall season of racing and riding. The best thing is there’s something for everyone. Road racing and riding, cross racing and clinics and whatever else you can dream of doing on your bike. The weather’s perfect, so get out and have some fun on your bike!

Events:

Team Time Trial – This is an exceptional event. It combines teamwork, skill and a bit of pain, but, it by far, is one of the most rewarding cycling events around. Gather your teammates, work on communication and skills and prepare to head out to Harvard, Illinois tomorrow morning. For race information, click here.

Harmon Hundred – It’s September, so it’s primetime for Centuries. Enjoy a fully supported ride on scenic and quiet roads. You can choose from 25, 50, 75 or the full 100 mile routes. For ride information, click here.

Chicross Cup Series Race #1 – Here we go! The chicrosscup series gets underway with the first race in LaBagh Woods. This park has a little bit of history with cross racing in Chicago and it’s also used for practice crits in the summer. It should be a perfect location to get the series started. The Svens are Coming – Looking to work on your cross skills to improve your placing in races? Attend these cross clinics by World Champion racers. This is a pretty fantastic opportunity, so don’t miss out on the fun and a great learning opportunity. For clinic information, click here.

Coming Up:

Fall Fling – Got some road racing left in you? Head out to this annual series in the western suburbs. The series consists of three criteriums and one time trial, held over two weekends. Each course gets a little more technical, but nothing too crazy. For series information, click here.

Rapha – Trek before the Trek Cup – Join the Rapha crew for this Wednesday morning ride. They’ll have their new mobile clubhouse, Fran’s, and they’ll be serving up coffee, beverages and donuts! You may have to play hooky or show up a little late for work to attend this 40 mile ride, but it’ll get your day off to a great start. For information and to register, click here.

Trek CX Cup – It’s a big weekend for cross with events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday! They’ll have rides, a clinic and some awesome racing! For event information, click here.

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day

Labor Day marks the unofficial end to summer. No need to fret as there’s still plenty of great weather ahead! At this point in cycling, we begin to change our focus. For some it’s a time to decompress from a busy season of racing and just enjoy riding for fun. Others have been building up for the start of the cyclo-cross season. Whatever direction you’re headed, there’s so much ahead! Check below for a few options in our area.

Events:

Gateway Cup – It’s the season finale for heavy-hitter road races. The Gateway Cup includes four races over the Labor Day weekend in St Louis. The courses are challenging and the competition is tough as well. If you’re looking for one more chance to mix it up on the road, be sure to head south for this event. Bryce Master 30K TT – Located in Garden Prairie, this course is well known by time trial specialists. It’s a little rangy and isn’t completely flat, but a good course to put in a good effort. For race information, click here.

Track Racing:

We’re wrapping up the 2016 season at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome. Last night’s racing included the Illinois State Madison Championships and the final opportunity for points towards the Rider of the Year competition. That means this coming Thursday is all about fun!
