Cyclocross World Championships

The hot spot in cycling this weekend will be Bieles, Luxenbourg, where the UCI World Cyclocross Championships will be held. If you’re not already headed there, you can still see what’s up by clicking here. They’ll also have a recap of the races at the Rapha Clubhouse.

If you’re sticking around town, there’s still plenty to do. You can bundle up and head outside to ride. Or you can choose from an assortment of cycling related activities held inside. For a list of local cycling activities, check the listing below.

ABD Cycling’s Indoor Time Trial Event #2 – It’s round two of this annual indoor series. This week’s course is a rolling 10K, which will challenge your power to weight number. All indoor events are held at Winfield Central School. For more information, click here.

Chicago Winter Bike Swap – Looking for a good deal on a bike or bike parts? The bike swap is a great place to find good deals, cycling treasures and hang out with your friends in the cycling community. This event takes place on Sunday at Harper College. For more information, click here.

CX Worlds Svenness Live with Bill Schieken – Head out to the Rapha Chicago Clubhouse for a recap of the results of Cyclocross Worlds with Bill Schieken of CXHairs. For event information and to register, click here.

Fat Abominable Snow Bike Scramble – Looking for an opportunity to race your fat bike in a casual setting? Make plans to head up to Silver Lake Park in Wisconsin for a lighthearted off-road race. For more information, click here.

Winter Bike Swap 2017 – Looking for another opportunity to buy or sell some cycling equipment? Head to Jaks Tap from 11am until 4pm next Saturday. This is a bit easier to attend if you’re a city dweller and it’s a pretty low-key environment. For event information, click here.

Plan Ahead:

Women’s Trans/Gender Neutral Beginning Road Clinic – Are you looking to get into bike racing but would like to know some of the ins and outs before you step up to the line? Plan to attend this clinic sponsored by Half Acre Cycling on March 12. For more information, click here.

Skyway Classic Criterium Series – Take the skills you learn at the road clinic and put them to the test in this beginner criterium series. It’s four days of racing, so you’ll have an opportunity to keep trying day after day to achieve your goals. The series goes from April 3-6 at Calumet Park on the south side of the city.

Ride to Women’s March – Chicago

Holy heat wave, it’s warm in Chicago! Don’t let this warm weather event pass you by without getting outside. There’s plenty to do and see on your bike this weekend, so get out have some fun before we switch back to winter.

Events: 

Ride to Women’s March – Empowered women of Chicago, this ride is for you! Join Mia Moore and others as they ride together to get in a workout and then head to the Women’s March downtown. The ride will depart from the Rapha Clubhouse Chicago. For ride and event details, click here.

Metro Mountain Bikers Social Ride – This ride was intended to be a stroll around and over frozen lakes near Milwaukee. Since there isn’t a hint of frost, I think this event will have a few detours, but it should still be fun. If you’re looking to get out on your fat bike with friends, head north for some off-road fun. For event details, click here.

I Am Fat – For those looking for endurance miles on a fat bike, this event will work for you. It’s a three hour event which can be ridden solo or as a team of three. The event is held in Iowa City, so it’s a bit of a hike to get there, but if you’re up for the challenge, the drive will be worth it. For event details, click here.

Cyclocross Nationals in Full Swing

It’s been another brutal weather week in Chicago, but if you look ahead, things are definitely looking up. The forecast for the coming week includes temps in the forties, and that’ll feel downright balmy compared to ZERO! The days are also getting longer and by the end of the month, we’ll see a noticeable difference. Keep your focus and power through this season. It’ll all pay off very soon.

There’s still quite a bit of action in the cycling world with national championships out east and some fun events at home. Check the listings below for details.

Events: 

USA Cyclocross Nationals – All eyes have been on Hartford, Connecticut this week as the USA Cyclocross Nationals are underway. Chicagoland’s very own Sydney Guagliardo took the win in the women’s 35-39 race. We’re so proud!! There’s more ahead and changing course conditions to boot! For event details, click here.

ABD Cycling Indoor TT Series Event # 1 – Whether you’re looking for a little motivation for your winter training or you’re looking to keep your racing edge sharp, this time trial series is for you! Cyclocross Nationals Viewing Party – Join your fellow cycling friends to watch the Elite Men’s and Women’s Cyclocross Nationals races at Rapha Chicago on Sunday from noon till 2pm. For event details or to RSVP, click here.

Coming Up:

Winter Bike to Work Rally – Have you been braving the cold this season and continued commuting to work? Or, are you looking for a little motivation to get back out? Join fellow cyclists at Daly Plaza on January 13 from 6:30am til 8am to kick-off the Winter Bike Challenge. They’ll have Dark Matter coffee, Eli’s cheesecake and lots of giveaways. Cyclocross Nationals

As we wrap up 2016, it’s a time to look back at all our accomplishments of the past year and look ahead to 2017 with new goals for another successful riding and racing season. The best way to move forward is to set goals, stick with your plan and stay consistent in your routine.

You’ll be able to start the New Year off right with a ride outside. The temperature this weekend is forecasted to be pretty terrific for winter weather, so don’t pass up a good opportunity. Check the listings below for upcoming events.

Events: 

USA Cyclocross Nationals – All the preparation and discipline, especially through the holidays, is going to pay off in a few short days. Cross Nationals begin this coming Tuesday and continues through Sunday in Hartford, Connecticut. There’ll be some terrific battles to take home the prized national championship jerseys. Rapha Festive 500

What a difference a week makes. Last week at this time we were heading into a brutal weather pattern that kept even some of the most die-hard riders inside. This weekend we’ve got a big warmup, so in-between rushing from one holiday party to the next, be sure to get out and pedal your bike.

Events: 

Rapha Festive 500 – Looking to keep fit over the holidays? Challenge yourself to ride five hundred kilometers in the eight days between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. It just takes a moment to register and then track your miles. For event information, click here.

Coming Up:

USA Cyclocross Nationals –No skipping workouts over the holiday’s if you’re planning on making nationals your goal race for this season! Midwest Cyclocross Regional Championships

Winter doesn’t officially begin for a few more days, but if this past week is any indication of what’s to come, we’re going to have to put on our tough Midwestern pants and plow through the upcoming months. The outdoor events this weekend will be for the hearty. No worries, there are plenty of local indoor riding options out there to keep you working towards your 2017 riding goals.

Events: 

Braver than the Elements – Women around the world will be participating in this annual winter ride. Unfortunately, the Chicago edition will be postponed until a time where it is safe for riders to participate. The ride may be postponed, but there’ll still be a party at the Rapha Chicago Clubhouse tomorrow morning. Come out, have some treats and hang with local cycling enthusiasts! For details, click here.

Peoria Frosty CX – This race will live up to its name with the wintery conditions in our forecast. This will be the more local option for racing this weekend, so if you’re just looking to have fun and stay in shape, this may be your pick event for the weekend. For event information, click here.

Midwest Cyclocross Regional Championships – Looking to do one better than a state championship? You’ll have your chance tomorrow in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. The course will feature an uphill start, off camber sections, a ride on the snow covered speedway, and a spin through the Barn o’ Barriers. For a preview of the course and conditions, click here. Afterglow

The changing weather may have an interesting affect on this weekend’s riding and racing activities. There’s snow headed our way, which may not be the worst thing for an adventurous cyclists. With the right equipment, whether that means a cross, mountain or fat bike, a ride in fresh snow can be really fun. For skilled riders, the snow may bring and advantage to those racing. For those not accustomed to plowing through the snow, it will be a great chance to pick up new skills. There are still lots of events coming up, so add a few layers and keep riding!

 

Events: 

Afterglow – This fun-spirited race returns to Humboldt Park tomorrow morning. The race will have your typical category and age group events, but it will also have single speed, fat bike categories – and the Grudge Match! Proceeds benefit West Town Bikes and Blackstone Bikes youth programs, so you’ll have a lot of fun doing something you can feel good about. For event information, click here.

Hugh Jass Race #5 – Take part in this fat bike winter series. The series encourages cycling outdoors in the winter months. Bring your own fat bike or rent one! This event will be held at Canal Shores in Evanston. For race information, click here.

Miller Chill – Head down to Bloomington’s for this late season race. The event is held in Miller Park and the course features a stone bridge flyover, a sandy beach crossing and hills. For race information, click here.

Coming Up:

Braver than the Elements – Join with women around the world to brave the elements and get outside and ride. The Chicago ride will begin at the Rapha Chicago Clubhouse on Saturday, December 17. The 60 mile ride will depart at 9am and there will be treats before, during and after the. It may be a chilly day, so dress warm and prepare for lots of fun. For event details, click here.

Peoria Frosty CX – If you’re not ready to throw in the towel on your cross season, you’re in luck! Head out to Peoria for a little more fun. The race may well live up to its frosty name with next week’s temperatures predicted to be downright chilly. For event information, click here.

Midwest Cyclocross Regional Championships – Looking to do one better than a state championship? You’ll have your chance next Saturday in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. It’s a two-day cross fest near Madison which features the championship event on Saturday and another great race on Sunday. For event information, click here.

Midwest Grand Prix of Cyclocross – This is the second day of the two-day series. Sunday’s race is a non-championship event and the course will be slightly different than Saturday. But if you’re going to make the trip, you might as well may it a double header weekend. For details, click here.
