Cycling and Doughnuts

We have a sweet weekend ahead with bike swaps, bike races and doughnuts! With all the options, there’s sure to be something cycling related for you. Check the list below for all the upcoming cycling activities in our area.

 

Events:

Kenosha Velodrome Swap Meet– Looking for a good deal on bike parts and equipment? A bike swap is a sure bet for finding gems; new and old. The event is Saturday from 9am to 3pm at the Local 72 Union Hall. For more information, click here.

Chicago Women’s Bike Clothing Swap – This is kind of a last minute add, but if you’re looking for some new to you cycling clothing or are looking to unload a few favorites, this is a great event. It’s tomorrow from 4-6pm and it’ll be a bit of a cycling social as well. For more information, click here.

Kenosha Velosport Pre-season Races – It’s the final event in this 3 weekend series in Kenosha. The course is a 1.2 mile loop near the Kenosha Airport. For race information, click here.

Pastry-Brest-Pastry – It’s 65 miles of self-supported, mixed terrain riding and there are 4 checkpoints where you can refuel with doughnuts! The event begins at the Pedal & Spoke in North Aurora. For more information, click here.

Screw City Cyclocross Classic – You may think that cyclocross racing is in the rear view mirror, but it’s alive and well in Rockford! Head out this Sunday for some off-road fun. For more information, click here.

Coming Up:

Skyway Crit Series Recon Ride – If you’re thinking of participating in the upcoming beginner race series, this recon ride is a great opportunity to prepare you for what’s ahead. You’ll get a chance to ride the course, ask questions and set your mind at ease so you’re ready to roll when the races begin. For more information, click here.

Plan Ahead: The last week of the month is a little bit quiet with the Easter holiday, but the quiet ends and the racing action begins the very next weekend. From Saturday, April 7 through Thursday, April 12 it’s bike racing time!

Rough Road 100 – Head out to this spring gravel classic which begins in Morris on Saturday, April 7. You can choose from either 64k or 100K. For more information, click here.

Spring Super Crit – You’ll switch gears from Saturday’s gravel to Sunday’s solid surface on the race track at the Blackhawk Farms Raceway. It’s become a great pre-season race with its unique location which offers wide open corners and indoor restroom facilities! For more information, click here.

Skyway Classic Crit Series – Are you curious about bike racing and looking for an opportunity to give it a try? The Skyway Classic series is designed to introduce you to the sport without all the hubbub of a large scale event. There are four consecutive days of criterium racing (April 9-12), which gives you the opportunity to try and see what works and what doesn’t. For more information, click here.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

You’ll have the luck of the Irish as you head out to ride this weekend. Whether you plan to ride or race, you’ll have options and favorable weather. The calendar is filling quickly, so plan ahead and get set to roll.

Events:

Kenosha Velosport Pre-season Races – It’s week 2 of this 3 weekend series in Kenosha. Last week there was a good turnout for racers and this weekend should be even better. The course is a 1.2 mile loop near the Kenosha Airport. For race information, click here.

St Patrick’s Day Ride – It’s the annual Wheeling Wheelmen spring ride. Select from either 16, 20 or 36 mile routes. The event begins in Wauconda, so you can escape from the city and enjoy a few miles on scenic country roads. For more information, click here.

Ladies Groad Ride – This event is geared to get you ready for the upcoming gravel races. It will be a 40 mile loop of road, gravel and crushed limestone. The ride begins in Aurora at the Endiro Coffee shop. For more information, click here.

Cyclocross World Championships

The center of the cycling world will be the Netherlands this weekend for the 2018 UCI Cyclocross World Championships. The championships will be held on Saturday and Sunday, and you can view the races at local shops, including Johnny Sprockets and the Rapha Clubhouse. Be sure to keep an eye out for our local heroine, Maria Larkin, who will be racing on the Irish National team!!

Let the championship event inspire you to keep your season goals alive as we battle another cold weekend in Chicago. Whether you bundle up and head outside, or hunker down on a trainer, keep at it!

Peoria Indoor TT – Looking for another indoor suffer-fest to measure your fitness or to satisfy your competitive spirit? Make plans to compete in this Saturday’s indoor time trial in Peoria. Instead of riding a particular course or distance, this race is set up to ride as far as you can in 25 minutes. For more information, click here.

Hugh Jass Series – This weekend, the fat bike series will be part of the Heiliger Huegel Ski Club’s Winter Carnival. There’ll be ski events both weekend days and the bike race will take place on Sunday. It’ll be lots of fun, but plenty of work since the course includes Holy Hill! For more information, click here.

Yoga for Cyclists – The eight week yoga series continues on Monday. Classes are held at the Rapha Clubhouse Chicago at 7pm. The class is free, just be sure to register and show up with your yoga mat! This is a great way to keep your body healthy and flexible for all your upcoming goals! For event and registration information, click here.

ABD Indoor Time Trial #2 – The indoor competition continues with the second of ABD’s series. It’ll be another 10K rolling hill challenge for you to test your fitness and competitive edge. For race information or to register, click here.

Corn Cross Racing

The weekend got off to a great start today with Chicago’s annual Winter Bike to Work Rally at Daley Plaza. With morning temperatures in the 40’s, it was easy to draw a crowd and have riders mingle for a while. The weather will continue to be mildly pleasant this weekend, so if you’re experiencing a bit of cabin fever, now’s a great time to get outside and ride.

Events:

Corn Cross – For those not quite ready to hang up the cross bike, there’s one more race for you to get your fix. Head south to Urbana tomorrow for a fun-filled day of racing at Weaver Park. For more information, click here.

Yoga for Cyclists – The eight week yoga series continues on Monday. Classes are held at the Rapha Clubhouse Chicago at 7pm. The class is free, just be sure to register and show up with your yoga mat! Braver than the Elements

We’ve got a winter warm-up just in time for the women’s weekend. The weekend will begin with Chicago’s Women’s March and Rally on Saturday. Sunday, join the ladies for Chicago’s edition of Braver than the Elements – an event celebrated by women around the world! Don’t miss out on all this weekend has to offer. Events:

Braver than the Elements – This Sunday, be part of an international women’s ride. In Chicago, the group will head out on a 45 mile loop to Northbrook and the Skokie Lagoons. The ride will depart at the Rapha Clubhouse Chicago at 9am. Get there early to enjoy a cup of coffee before the ride takes off. For more information, click here.

Bikes to Beer – BFF is starting off the New Year with its first beer run to Ten Ninety Brewing Co., in Glenview. The total ride distance is 35 miles, but, as always, there is an option to take the Metra home after the brewery tour. For more information, click here.

Winter Bike to Work – Next Friday is Chicago’s 26th annual Winter Bike to Work Day Rally. Head to Daley Plaza between 7-9am to take part in all the fun. REI will be handing out free bike lights, coupons and offering minor bike adjustments. There will also be great giveaways from vendors including Dark Matter Coffee and Eli’s Cheesecake. Cyclocross National Championships

We seem to have made it out of the deep freeze and into some typical winter weather. Not exactly perfect outdoor riding conditions for everyone, but for some this weather is a relief. Whether you opt to train indoors or outside, tis the season to keep building. There are some great local events and the big stage for cycling is Reno. Check the listings below for what’s going on!

Events:

Cyclocross National Championships – It may be chilly around here, but the heat is on in Reno, Nevada, with the Cyclocross National Championships! The racing began on the 9th and will continue through Sunday, January 14th. For more information, click here.

ABD Indoor Time Trial Series – The road season begins with the indoor time trial series put on by ABD Cycling. The first event is this Sunday, January 14th at Winfield Central High School. First up will be a 10k rolling hill course. For event information, click here.

Cold Start to the Year

The start of the New Year has been a frigid one and it seems only the incredibly hearty riders have ventured out to face the extreme temps on their bikes. Hugh Jass Fat Bike Series – Event #5 – Fat bike riding doesn’t get much better than riding on snow-covered trails and that’s what you’ll get at this Hugh Jass event! This week the series heads to northern Kettle Moraine, where riders will hit the New Fane mountain bike trails. For more information, click here.
