Cyclocross World Championships

The hot spot in cycling this weekend will be Bieles, Luxenbourg, where the UCI World Cyclocross Championships will be held. If you’re not already headed there, you can still see what’s up by clicking here. They’ll also have a recap of the races at the Rapha Clubhouse.

If you’re sticking around town, there’s still plenty to do. You can bundle up and head outside to ride. Or you can choose from an assortment of cycling related activities held inside. For a list of local cycling activities, check the listing below.

Women’s Pro Cycling with Sarah Connolly – Struggling to follow the women’s pro cycling circuit? Join the ladies at BFF Cycling for an informative clinic led by Sarah Connolly. For clinic details and to register, click here.

ABD Cycling’s Indoor Time Trial Event #2 – It’s round two of this annual indoor series. This week’s course is a rolling 10K, which will challenge your power to weight number. All indoor events are held at Winfield Central School. For more information, click here.

Chicago Winter Bike Swap – Looking for a good deal on a bike or bike parts? The bike swap is a great place to find good deals, cycling treasures and hang out with your friends in the cycling community. This event takes place on Sunday at Harper College. For more information, click here.

CX Worlds Svenness Live with Bill Schieken – Head out to the Rapha Chicago Clubhouse for a recap of the results of Cyclocross Worlds with Bill Schieken of CXHairs. For event information and to register, click here.

Fat Abominable Snow Bike Scramble – Looking for an opportunity to race your fat bike in a casual setting? Make plans to head up to Silver Lake Park in Wisconsin for a lighthearted off-road race. For more information, click here.

Winter Bike Swap 2017 – Looking for another opportunity to buy or sell some cycling equipment? Head to Jaks Tap from 11am until 4pm next Saturday. This is a bit easier to attend if you’re a city dweller and it’s a pretty low-key environment. For event information, click here.

Plan Ahead:

Women’s Trans/Gender Neutral Beginning Road Clinic – Are you looking to get into bike racing but would like to know some of the ins and outs before you step up to the line? Plan to attend this clinic sponsored by Half Acre Cycling on March 12. For more information, click here.

Skyway Classic Criterium Series – Take the skills you learn at the road clinic and put them to the test in this beginner criterium series. It’s four days of racing, so you’ll have an opportunity to keep trying day after day to achieve your goals. The series goes from April 3-6 at Calumet Park on the south side of the city.

Ride to Women’s March – Chicago

Holy heat wave, it’s warm in Chicago! Don’t let this warm weather event pass you by without getting outside. There’s plenty to do and see on your bike this weekend, so get out have some fun before we switch back to winter.

Events: 

Ride to Women’s March – Empowered women of Chicago, this ride is for you! Join Mia Moore and others as they ride together to get in a workout and then head to the Women’s March downtown. The ride will depart from the Rapha Clubhouse Chicago. For ride and event details, click here.

Metro Mountain Bikers Social Ride – This ride was intended to be a stroll around and over frozen lakes near Milwaukee. Since there isn’t a hint of frost, I think this event will have a few detours, but it should still be fun. If you’re looking to get out on your fat bike with friends, head north for some off-road fun. For event details, click here.

I Am Fat – For those looking for endurance miles on a fat bike, this event will work for you. It’s a three hour event which can be ridden solo or as a team of three. The event is held in Iowa City, so it’s a bit of a hike to get there, but if you’re up for the challenge, the drive will be worth it. For event details, click here.

Pumpkin Cross

Our spring was cold and wet, but our fall continues to be just delightful with mild temperatures. I think we must be swapping seasonal temperatures! Don’t pass up an opportunity to participate in your favorite sport, especially when we’re given a gift of warm weather. There are lots of cycling events to fill your weekend, check below for a few options in Chicagoland

Events:

Grafton Pumpkin Cross – This cross race is a celebration of the season. The race course features the challenges of a big climb, a slalom descent and gravel. Post-race festivities include a food truck, music, beer and pumpkins. For more information, click here.

Chicross Cup Event #3 – This week’s race is back in the city. You’ll head to the Dan Ryan woods on south side. This course offers climbing and some fast descents. There are also flat open areas, a section that winds through the trees and a set of flagstone steps to run up. For more information, click here.

Rapha Chicago – The opening of the Rapha clubhouse is delayed just a little, but the celebrations will go on! Plan on coming out for the grand opening festivities. There’ll be guest appearances as well as cocktails and Half Acre Beer. When they’re not celebrating, they’ll be riding and you can join them in a club ride! Track Cycling:

UCI Masters World Track Cycling Championships – It’s been a busy week in Manchester, England, as track racers from around the world have gathered to compete in this heavy-hitter event. We have a few locals that have made the journey and are doing quite well. For details on the championships, click here.

Ed Rudolph Velodrome 2016 Awards Dinner – Come and celebrate a great season of racing at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome. There’ll be a social hour, dinner and awards. The event will be held at EJ’s in Skokie. For event details, click here.

Coming Up:

Ichabod Cross – Are you afraid of shapes and shadows in the dark, as Ichabod Crane was? You’ll have to pedal your way out of fear at this evening cross race. This race is the first of two weekend races in Beardstown, which is near Springfield. For information on this hauntingly fun race, click here.

Pumpkin Hop Cross – This is the second race in this two day series in Beardstown. The course includes a flyover and there is also a relay race category. For race information, click here.

Humbolt Park Cross – Head just over the border for one of the Wisconsin cross series events. This race is located in a park near Milwaukee. For race information, click here.

Chicross Cup Event #3 – Last year this race moved locations because of construction, but it appears to be right back at Carpentersville Park this year. The course is typically designed well for a limited amount of space, so it’ll be another great event. For race information, click here.

Badger Cross – This course has a bit of history behind it and just a few years ago was used for cyclo-cross nationals. It’s located in Verona, Wisconsin, which is not far from Madison. Along with a great race, they’ll also have food, beer and music for a cross-festival. For race information, click here.

UCI World Cyclo-Cross Championships

We’re in for a bit of a heatwave this weekend, with temps reaching into the mid 40’s. Be sure to get outside and feel the freedom only a great bike ride can bring!

There may be a heatwave in Chicago, but things will really be heating up in a place about four thousand miles away. The cycling world will turn its focus to Hoogerheide, Belgium this weekend with the 2016 UCI World Championship Cyclo-Cross races. We’ll have newly crowned champions this Sunday, will your favorite be among them? For information on the event, click here.

 

Events:

Cold Roll – Looking for a way to cure the winter blues? Take part in this fat bike retreat and adventure. The two day event will take place at Timber Pointe Outdoor Center, overlooking Lake Bloomington (IL). There’ll be riding, hiking, yoga and more and it all benefits Easter Seals. Hugh Jass Fat Bike Series Event #5 – This fat bike series has added a new race to the schedule and it’s this Saturday. The race will be held in Minooka Park in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I doubt there will be much snow to plow through, but it’s possible you may be treated to a preview of the mountain bike trails that are scheduled to open this coming June – who knows?? Chicago Winter Bike Swap – If you’re looking for a good deal on bikes, bike parts or other cycling equipment, then you should head out to the bike swap this Sunday. Plan to arrive early for the best finds and stay late for the best deals. For more information on the event, click here.

ABD Indoor Time Trial Series Event #2 – The annual series continues with a hilly 10k course to challenge the limits of your power. For details on the event, click here.

Intent Indoor Time Trial #2 – There’s a second option for indoor time trials with Intent’s race. The course is similar to the ABD race, except there’s an additional 5K to cover. For race details, click here.

Coming up:

Frosty Hog Fat Tire Relay Race – Next weekend, head north to Cudahy, Wisconsin for this fat tire relay race. The course is located in Sheridan Park, which is located along Lake Michigan, and may create a great environment for a fierce course. For race details, click here.

Hugh Jass Fat Bike Series Event #6 – The fat bike series continues with a trip north to Fon du Lac, where there certainly is a better chance of snow. The race is located in Roosevelt Park, which is at the southern edge of Lake Winnebago. Plan ahead to make a trip north for a great adventure. For race information, click here.

UCI Masters’ World Track Cycling

This week I’m reporting to you from Manchester, England. I’m here competing in the UCI Masters’ World Championships for track cycling. It’s been a fantastic week of racing for both myself and all the other competitors. It’s so incredible to see athletes from the earliest age categories (35+) up to 80 years, competing at this level. While the competition is certainly fierce, off the track, athletes from around the world share a common bond and many smiles. Just another reminder to strive to reach your goals, no matter what your age and keep moving yourself forward. The races wrap up on Saturday evening. For information on all the events, click here.

Events:

Trek CXC Cup –Starting today, Waterloo, Wisconsin will be where the epicenter of the cyclo-cross world. There’ll be everything from a women’s social, clinics and of course, racing! This is a UCI event, so the biggest names in cross will be there. There will also be amateur racing on a technically challenging course. For a full listing of all the events, click here.

Chicross Cup Series Race #3 – This week’s race will be held at the Dan Ryan Woods, which is a gem on the south side of the city. Track Cycling Banquet – The 2015 track cycling season for the Ed Rudolph Velodrome is over. Time to celebrate the success of the season at the annual banquet. The banquet will be held this Sunday, October 11 at EJ’s Place in Skokie. Coming Up:

Pumpkin Cross – Just north of Milwaukee is the town of Grafton and home to Pumpkin Cross. If you like the challenge of a big climb and technical riding that’ll take you on a slalom descent and through gravel, this may be perfect for you. The race is part of Wisconsin’s Super Cup series. Chicross Cup Series Race #4 –Next week’s race heads to Elgin. While in the same town, this is a new venue at Randall Oaks Park, which is located 3.5 miles from Carpenter Park (previous course location). We’ll have to wait and see what Main Street Bicycles and Sasquatch Squadron dream up for a fun and competitive course. For race details, click here.

Road World Championships

The UCI Road World Championships are underway in Richmond, Virginia. All week long top athletes from around the world have been competing in the time trial, team time trial and this weekend is the road circuit. It’s a huge honor to be hosting the event here in the states, and the US athletes are doing us proud! There are a few more opportunities to take home the coveted rainbow stripes. Back home in Chicago, we’ve got a bit more road racing, while our neighbors to the north are hosts to this weekend’s cross racing action. Check the details below.

Events:

Fall Fling – The fall series continues at the DuPage Business Park, which is just across the street from the first week’s Pella Windows course. Saturday’s race is a circuit course, which is not too technical, but more rangy than your typical crit. Sunday’s course is a shorter version of Saturday’s course and includes a hairpin turn. The final day typically includes a bbq for all participants. Not a bad way to end the series! For race information, click here.

Cross-Shooshko –Looking to improve your technical cyclo-cross skills? Head just over the border to Milwaukee for this technically challenging course with rolling hills. It’s located in Kosciuszko Park, and now that you’ve mastered the name, challenge yourself to master the course. For race information, click here.

Humboldt Park Cross – Not to be confused with Chicago’s Humboldt Park, this race is located in Milwaukee and is part of the Wisconsin Cross series. If you’re looking to race cross, head north this weekend. For race information, click here.

Coming Up:

Chicross Cup Series Race #2– Next week the series heads to the corn country of DeKalb, Illinois. The race course is located in Hopkins Park, and is familiar to many. It’s a figure 8 configuration with a flyover as its main feature. The course also includes a short section of single-track, some off camber sections and some open grassy sections. Al Stern Marathon Bicycle Road Race – If you’re looking to get some long and fast-paced road miles, this race is perfect for you. The course is located in Aroma Park and is part of the Two Rivers course held earlier this summer. The course is flat, but make no mistake, there will be wind! For race information, click here.
