Midwest Challenge

Major Taylor Velodrome

You might think the Midwest Challenge is having to deal with this miserable weather, but that’s not quite it. We may still be challenged by the weather, but we’re hoping things will clear up in enough time to get the track races underway in Indianapolis for the Midwest Challenge. Read on ahead for details on the road and track cycling events in our area.

Wisconsin State Criterium Championships – You may not be from Wisconsin, but that doesn’t mean you can’t compete in their championship races (you just can’t be awarded the championship). Located southwest of Milwaukee, this 8 corner crit course is flat and fast. For race information, click here.

Track Events:

Midwest Challenge- It’s a weekend full of high caliber track racing this weekend in Indianapolis. There are both mass start and timed events. For event details, click here.

Illinois & Wisconsin Junior State Track Championships – The junior track championships for both Illinois and Wisconsin will be held next weekend at the Ed Rudolph velodrome in Northbrook. There should be plenty of competition and larger fields of riders. For details on the event, click here.

Scarlet Fire 30KTT – Located in Garden Prairie, this time trial course is a little rangy, but nothing too technical. For details on the event, click here.

Set a Goal:

Wolfgang Freitag 50K 2 Person TT – Plan ahead, find a partner and practice up for the upcoming 2 person time trial on Sunday, July 12. It’s a different effort than an individual time trial, but working with a teammate can be extremely rewarding. For details on the upcoming event, click here.

Midwest Women’s Road Race Championships – Plan ahead to head out to this spectacular women’s race. Make it your goal to come home with the Midwest Road Racing Champions jersey. The course is a 14.6 mile loop with a short uphill kicker, sweeping rollers and flat sections through the farmlands of Ohio. It also includes sections once used in the 1980 Olympic qualifying event, which featured three-time Tour de France winner, Greg LeMond. The course starts in the small town of Zanesfield Ohio and also goes through the quaint village of Alexandria. For race information, click here.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Halloween

We can certainly paint a wicked picture of this Halloween with dark skies and the cold and blustery weather we have today. That just means you’ll have to put on a few more layers to enjoy your favorite sport. There are plenty of great events ahead, and a few chances to scare your opponents with a ghoulish costume. Check the listings below for your cycling options and don’t forget you get an extra hour of sleep on Sunday.

Estabrook Park Cross This is still one of my all-time favorite cross courses and it’s considered a classic, since it’s been around since 1996. It’s located in a Milwaukee park and it offers up natural elements to challenge your technical skills. To make things even more fun – at least after the race, they are offering free Hofbrau beer and Usinger sausage to all participants! For race information, click here.

Chicross Cup Race Series Event #6 – This week the series heads to St. Charles for Campton Cross, one of the original courses in the CCC series.  Although there will be plenty of suffering, you’ll be able to mask your pain and show your game face when you come dressed for Halloween. Don’t miss out on all the fun. For race details, click here.

Coming Up:

Chicross Cup Race Series Event #7 – Next week the series heads to Woodstock for the Psi-Clocross for Life race. This course has a variety of challenges including wooded downhills and climbs, wide open grass power sections, a few off camber turns and a volleyball pit. You’ll need all your skills to power your way through this course, but it should be fun. For race details, click here.

Camrock Cross – Head north to Cambridge, Wisconsin for another great cyclo-cross course. This race is held in Camrock Park, which is a 422 acre park with many outdoor options – including cycling! For details on the race, click here.

Sadie Hawkins Style Ride – This isn’t your typical bike race, but strategy, skill, style and teamwork will get you to the finish line ahead of your competitors. Sound interesting? Even better, the race is a fundraiser for the Chicago Women’s Health Center. Registration begins at 3pm in Palmer Square Park and the race will kick off at 4pm. Post-race activities include a dance beginning at 7:30pm. For event details, click here.

Have a spooktacular weekend!

Labor Day Weekend

gateway_arch2The road racing season is winding down, but track is still holding out for a few more weeks at Northbrook and the CVC. Next Thursday Northbrook hosts the State Championship Madison races. Not sure what a Madison is? You should come and check it out! The Madison is a mass start, two-person team, Points Race competition. One teammate is always in the race, but teams typically switch out riders every lap. The exchange is done by the exiting rider flinging the entering rider into the field, with the field riding over the exchanges. It’s a crowd favorite, but it’s also a lot of fun for the competitors. Come and see what it’s all about. For information, click here http://www.northbrookvelodrome.org/.

Despite the holiday, there are still lots of riding and racing options for this weekend. Check below for some great opportunities.

Gateway Cup – This is the last major series for the summer in the Midwest. There are four days of racing around the St. Louis area and the courses and competition is typically top notch. If you’re looking for one more, big hurrah, this is the ticket. For event details, click here http://gatewaycup.com/.

Get your last bit of road racing in for the season! For more information, click here http://www.abdcycling.com/events/fling.html.

North Shore Century – It’s a few weeks away, but you’ll want to prepare to go the distance at this year’s North Shore Century. This is a favorite fall ride which begins in Evanston and heads as far north as Kenosha. For details on the event, click here http://www.evanstonbikeclub.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=690768&module_id=133508.

Have a safe and fun holiday weekend!
